Steam cleaning a small aircraft fuselage sounds simple until the first panel is in front of you. Buyers comparing cleaning equipment for light planes, sightseeing aircraft or training fleet operations should evaluate the machine against the airframe first — access, power supply, moisture control and the finish on the skin all change the specification.
What makes a fuselage different from a vehicle body
Small aircraft have curved, riveted, often unpainted or lightly painted aluminium and composite surfaces, with sensors, static dischargers, antennas, pitot covers and sealed windows along the way. A washer that works well on a car panel can be too aggressive here. Buyers should look for a machine that lets the operator adjust between a drier steam output and a wetter, more rinse-like output, so the same unit can lift bonded grease around wheel wells and then move across large skin panels with far less free water. PowerDe's cleaning equipment series is built around that dry-steam and wet-steam switching principle, and the fixed Fixed Steam Cleaning Machine PowerDe HW02 also adds a vacuum function for interior work.
Utilities available on the ramp decide the machine class
Before choosing a model, map the exact spot where cleaning will happen. Fixed stations such as the HW02 run on a 220 V supply with a 6 kW heater, an 80 L SUS304 tank, and published steam figures of 160° at 0.8 MPa — a good fit where mains power and a defined wash area exist. Where the aircraft has to be cleaned in a shared hangar bay or a narrow hard-standing, the battery-supported driving style units (PWD01, PWD02 and HMW2, each listed with and without battery) provide dry steam, wet steam and hot water modes and are positioned for indoor garages and tight outdoor spaces. Do not assume that a machine rated for cars can simply be wheeled to the apron; ask the supplier how the unit is fed, drained and protected between uses.
Ask the supplier these questions in writing
- Which surfaces and coatings has this machine been used on, and what nozzle and pressure practice does your team recommend around rivet lines, seals and instrument openings?
- What safety protections are fitted as standard? The PowerDe pages list leakage, short-circuit, high-temperature, high-voltage and water-shortage protection on the relevant models.
- Which parameters are published, and which are not? Temperature, pressure, tank volume and dimensions are documented for some models; run time, hose length, weight and accessory lists are not, so request them in the quotation.
- What is included for outdoor, mobile operation versus fixed installation, and how are spare parts and service handled?
- Can the supplier demonstrate a switch between dry and wet steam during the cleaning pass, not just in the datasheet?
Match the specification to the operation, not the brochure
A buyer's real cost is not the machine but the number of aircraft that can be cleaned per shift without rework or water ingress complaints. Confirm the power source, the water handling, the operator's reach across a fuselage, and the mode switching before comparing prices. If your operation needs a different configuration, PowerDe's engineering services cover customized steam cleaning equipment alongside standard models — send your airframe types, hangar layout and utility limits, and request written parameters for the exact model being quoted.
