Confirm who authorises cleaning on this machine
Before anything else, get a written answer from the machine-tool manufacturer or your service provider on what may be cleaned, with what, and whether cleaning voids a warranty or affects calibration. Ball screws, linear guides, way covers, encoder housings, the tool-changer mechanism and electrical cabinets all sit inside the envelope. If the machine is under a service agreement, that agreement usually already has words about cleaning methods; find them before an operator improvises.
Know where the swarf goes when it is loosened
Dried cutting-fluid residue holds fine swarf in place. Once that film is softened, the material it was holding has to go somewhere, and on a machining center it tends toward the chip auger, the sump, way covers and the seams under the table. Plan the sequence so that loosened residue is collected rather than washed into a drain path the machine does not have. For workshop-level machine tool steam cleaning, that means masking, a collection route and a disposal route agreed before the doors open.
Use the driest setting that does the job
Moisture is the risk you are managing, so the mode selection matters. A CNC machine cleaning equipment setup that offers both dry and wet steam lets the operator work cutting-fluid film with the drier mode and keep the wetter mode for the exterior panels and the sump lid. Ask the supplier for the delivered temperature and pressure at the nozzle and confirm the machine's own protection functions for leakage, high temperature and water shortage.
Keep lances away from way covers, wipers, bearing points, and any cable or sensor run. Those are the paths by which a cleaning job becomes a machine fault a week later.
Finish the job the machine expects afterwards
A cleaned machining center needs its lubrication checked, its coolant system assessed, and a dry run before it goes back into production. Residual moisture on ways and on the tool cone will not show up as a problem on the first part. Build the post-cleaning checks into the task, and write down what was cleaned, with what settings, and what the machine did afterwards.
If you are standardising this across a shop floor, send the machine types, their ages, the coolant system layout and the residue you are dealing with to PowerDe cleaning equipment and ask for the mode and accessory recommendation for each machine type.
