How can a facility plan cleaning for industrial equipment surfaces?

The water tank is the part of a steam cleaner that a buyer specifies least and that causes the most complaints in service: scale, a tank that runs dry mid-job, a fitting that does not match the site inlet. A configuration review is how a serious buyer settles those questions before the order. Here is how to request one and what to put in it.

Start the request with your water, not your cleaning job

Write down what the site actually supplies and attach it to the enquiry: mains water hardness or a recent analysis if you have one, whether the feed is softened or treated, inlet pressure if it is known, and the type of connection available at the wash point. Add whether the machine will be filled from a tank or connected to a running inlet.

Hardness is the deciding variable. Scale is what shortens heater and tank life, and the right tank material, capacity and descaling routine all follow from your water, not from the cleaning task. A configuration request that omits water quality gets an answer that is only half true.

State the duty you expect, in the units the supplier can check

Give the working pattern: how many items you clean per day, the typical cleaning time per item, and how many hours the machine runs between refills of its own tank. If you run two shifts, say so. If the machine sits idle for days and then runs hard, say that too — intermittent use with water left standing is a different condition from continuous duty.

Tank capacity is a function of that pattern. Ask directly: how long does a full tank last in the modes you will use, and how many items should you plan to finish between refills? A fixed machine such as the Fixed Steam Cleaning Machine PowerDe HW02 lists an 80 L SUS304 tank and a tap-water inlet with a 4-point internal-tooth fitting on its product page, which sets a very different duty answer from a mobile unit with a smaller tank.

Ask for the tank material and construction to be stated, not implied

Put three questions in writing: what the tank is made of, what the internal surfaces and fittings are made of, and how the tank is accessed for cleaning and inspection. Stainless grade matters where the water is aggressive or the machine heats hard; a welded seam, a baffle and a drain point are the details that decide whether a tank can be maintained at all.

Ask whether a sump or low-point drain exists, and whether the design allows the tank to be emptied at the end of a shift. A tank that cannot be drained is a tank that holds water against a heater all week.

Ask what the protection logic does when the water runs low

The water-shortage response is part of tank selection. Ask what the machine does at low level: does it stop the heater, alarm the operator, or both, and can the operator reset it without a service call. Where the machine lists protection functions, ask for the list and ask what each one actually switches off. On the HW02 page, leakage, short-circuit, high-temperature, high-voltage and water-shortage protection appear among the safeguards described there.

Request the descaling and inspection routine with the configuration

Ask the supplier to send, alongside the proposed configuration, the descaling interval they recommend for your water hardness, the agent or method they recommend, and the steps required to reach the tank interior. If the answer is that descaling needs partial disassembly, that is a maintenance cost you are buying along with the machine.

Ask also for the consumable list for the water path: inlet filter, any inline softener element, seals, pump parts and their replacement intervals and order codes.

Set out what you want back in writing

  • Recommended tank capacity and material for your hardness figure and daily duty
  • Estimated items cleaned per tank fill, in the modes you will use
  • Inlet fitting size and type matched to your wash point, or the adapter required
  • Tank access method, drain or sump arrangement, and emptying procedure
  • Low-water behaviour, reset procedure, and the full protection-function list
  • Descaling interval and method for your water, with the parts to reach the interior
  • Water-path consumables with intervals and order codes

Send the same list to every supplier you are considering and read the answers side by side. The supplier who answers with a grade, a capacity and a descaling interval is the one who has dealt with your water before.

How to open the conversation

You can submit your site conditions and duty pattern through Solutions, or write to us on the contact page. Attach a photograph of the wash point and its inlet, and a note of the hardness figure — those two items move the answer more than anything else in the enquiry. The full range is listed under PowerDe cleaning equipment.
