How can a company select an engineering partner for slit coating equipment?

Commissioning a membrane electrode hot press bonding machine is not a single event on the installation date. On a fuel-cell stack line, the press is the station where the membrane electrode assembly and the gasket or frame layers are fixed into a stack, so any drift in alignment, temperature, or pressure shows up downstream as seal failure, uneven contact, or rejected stacks. A team plans the commissioning around that dependency: the machine must be proven to hold its own published process conditions before it is asked to release product.

1. Put the process window on paper before the machine arrives

Before the equipment is on site, one document should state the conditions the press is expected to work within. For the 7-layer membrane electrode hot press bonding machine listed by Shenzhen PowerDe Automation Precision Equipment, the published values are a fitting error of no more than 0.2 mm, a working temperature of no more than 150 °C, a press pressure of 2 t, and a production cycle of at least 1.5 pcs/min. Those four figures are the starting point for the commissioning plan, not a finished recipe. Write them down together with the stack design they apply to, because the same press can be asked to run different layer counts, and the cycle time in particular changes with handling, not only with the press itself.

Where the customer's own stack specification differs from the machine listing — a tighter alignment tolerance, or a lower maximum temperature for the membrane — record the difference in the plan and treat the customer value as the one to verify. Never let two numbers circulate in parallel during commissioning, because the acceptance signature at the end of the project will refer to one of them.

2. Assign ownership across the whole team

Commissioning work on this kind of equipment crosses three functions, and an unclear split is the most common reason the schedule slips.

  • Process engineering owns the temperature, dwell, and pressure sequence, the alignment target, and the definition of an acceptable bond.
  • Equipment and facilities owns power quality, compressed air, heating stability, fixture and tooling preparation, and the physical alignment of the press with upstream and downstream handling.
  • Quality owns the measurement method for fitting error, the sample plan, and the record that says whether a condition was met.

Name one person per line, with a backup, in the same file as the process window. The vendor's commissioning engineer supports all three areas, but the acceptance decision belongs to the buyer's team. If your line also depends on the membrane electrode vacuum hot pressing machine, where the working vacuum is specified as no more than 60 Pa, the same ownership split applies with vacuum generation added to the facilities scope.

3. Sequence the checks from machine behaviour to product behaviour

Run the checks in an order where each stage protects the one after it.

  1. Utility and safety confirmation. Supply voltage, heating stability, protection interlocks, and guarding are confirmed before any heated press cycle. Record what was measured and by whom.
  2. Cold mechanical checks. With the plate not heated, verify platen parallelism, the alignment fixtures, and the repeatability of the feeding and indexing motions. Alignment problems are far cheaper to find cold than hot.
  3. Thermal characterisation. Measure how long the platen takes to reach the target, how stable it holds across the working area, and how the temperature recovers between consecutive cycles. This step usually reveals the real upper limit of the cycle time.
  4. Dry and sacrificial runs. Press dummy layups first so that bonding parameters can be pushed without consuming membrane material.
  5. Alignment verification against the tolerance. Measure fitting error on sacrificial parts using the same gauge and the same points Quality will use later. A tolerance of 0.2 mm is meaningless unless both sides agree on the measuring method.
  6. Short production run at the target cycle. Run continuously at the intended rate and log stoppages, jam causes, and manual interventions.

A cycle figure such as 1.5 pcs/min should be read as a result of loading, alignment, pressing, and unloading as they are actually arranged at your line, and confirmed by the continuous run rather than by a single timed press.

4. Decide acceptance criteria and evidence together

Before the visit, agree in writing what counts as passed. For each item in the plan, state the value, the measuring instrument, the number of samples, and who signs. A typical set of evidence for this station includes the alignment measurements, the platen temperature profile, the continuous-run log, and the inspection record of the bonded samples. Keep it as one file; it is the document your engineers will consult when the line changes six months later.

Write down the open questions in the same place. Some process limits of a hot-press station cannot be judged from the catalogue alone, and they are exactly the points to close during commissioning: the layer count you intend to bond, the allowable dwell time for your membrane, the tooling you already own, and the inspection you can perform on a finished stack.

5. Plan the knowledge transfer, not only the machine handover

Ask the vendor engineer to run one cycle while your operator leads and they coach, instead of watching a demonstration. Cover daily checks, consumable and wearing-part replacement, calibration of the alignment fixtures, and what to do when the fitting error drifts. Also record which parameter changes require vendor notification, because changing a recipe on a bonded-line press without control is how small adjustments turn into batch losses.

For teams building a new fuel-cell stack capability, thin-film solar and membrane electrode equipment from PowerDe covers several stations of this process family, and the same commissioning discipline — process window first, clear ownership, staged verification, documented acceptance — transfers across them. Where your requirements go beyond the listed configurations, confirm the process details with the manufacturer before the acceptance plan is fixed.
